🇫🇷 Changement brutal de décor Aéroport de Toronto, ça marche vite, ça ne dit pas bonjour, ou répond juste "yeah" à votre chaleureux "have a nice day !". Le choc est brutal et la froideur de l'environnement contraste avec la météo caniculaire. Je n'en fais pour autant pas toute une montagne car je sais que quelques heures plus tard, je retrouverai ma famille ! Un cousin installé depuis 10 ans à Montréal ainsi que ma mère et ma soeur venues tout droit de Bordeaux. Les retrouvailles sont émouvantes et requinquantes ! On profite de l'été (caniculaire, de tout mon voyage, je n'ai jamais eu aussi chaud qu'à Montréal !) : festivals, BBQ, glaces, balades et observation de baleines et belugas ! Le projet reprends 3 semaines plus tard et se concentre sur Montréal (Province du Québec) ! |

🇬🇧 Brutal change of the scenery Toronto Airport, people walk quickly, don't say "hello" and reply a simple "yeah" to my warm "have a nice day!". The choc is pretty brutal and the coldness of the environment contrasts with the heat wave. It's not a big deal though, because I know I am soon about to see my family again ! A cousin who's lived at Montreal for 10 years and my mother and my sister who came directly from Bordeaux. The reunion is moving and energizing ! We have a nice stay in Quebec province despite of the heat wave : we make the most of summer activities, there's no day without animations and we had the chance to see whales ! The project is back after a 3-weeks family break and focuses on Montréal (Province of Quebec) ! |

La consigne Contrairement à la France, le Canada n'a pas laissé disparaitre son système de consigne. Quasiment tous les contenants sont consignés (verre, canette en aluminium, bouteille en plastique, jusqu'au Tetra Pak dans la province de l'Alberta). Mais c'est quoi déjà la consigne ? |

Deposit-refund system Contrary to France, Canada has kept its deposit-refund system. Almost every containers are refundable in Canada (glass, can, plastic bottle and even Tetra-Pak in Alberta Province). What's the deposit-refund system ? Refundable (or returnable) packaging benefits from a special recycling channel. The majority (plastic, glass and aluminum cans) are sent to recycling channels with process of transformation. Also, some glass bottles are simply cleaned and refilled, saving the energy of the process of transformation. The advantages of the deposit-refund system compared to a conventional sorting system (also existing in Canada) : 1. Optimization of selective sorting: a primary sorting is already done and the containers are less likely to be contaminated by other waste (in Quebec, we throw the glass in the sorting bins, which, by breaking, complicates any recycling process for other recyclable waste). Finally, it is almost certain that the returnable waste will be recycled, while only 54% of waste from the recycling bin can be recovered (in Quebec). 2. This system is accompanied by a financial incentive, to push people to return their containers to the consignment channels, and to avoid that waste to be found in nature. Hence the importance of having at home a dedicated bin for refundable containers or to deposit them in suitable places. |

La Coop les Valoristes Au Canada (comme dans beaucoup de pays du monde finalement), la gestion des déchets est une compétence locale, en l'occurrence, ici, provinciale. Le Québec, est, avec le Manitoba, la province la moins avancée dans son système de consignation. En plus de considérer une gamme de déchets plus réduite dans son système de consignation, il n'y existe qu'un seul dépôt-consigne (un entrepôt où les personnes peuvent se faire rembourser leurs contenants consignés). D'autres lieux de remboursement existent mais ils présentent des limites. Ce dépôt-consigne est géré par la Coop les Valoristes, une coopérative de solidarité créee par et pour les valoristes. |

Coop Les Valoristes In Canada (finally like in main of the countries of the world), waste management is managed locally, i.e by Provinces in Canada. Quebec (with Manitoba) is the less advanced province regarding the deposit-refund system. In addition to consider a narrow range of containers, only one single bottle-depot exists in Quebec (a place where people can be refunded for their collected containers, without limit of quantity). Other places exist, but they have some limits. This bottle-depot is managed by the Coop les Valoristes, a cooperative created by and for the binners (Canadian waste-pickers, for English speakers). |

Les valoristes Les récupérateurs informels de déchets sont appelés valoristes en Canada francophone et binner en Canada anglophone. Ils (sur)vivent de la récupération-remboursement de contenants consignés, collectés en porte à porte, dans les rues, parcs, lors des évènements, ou issus de dons. Ils sont pour la plupart issus de milieu à faibles revenus. On y dénombre particulièrement beaucoup de personnes âgées avec faible pension de retraite. |

The binners In Canada, informal waste-pickers are called binner in English Canadian and valoriste in French Canadian. They make a living (or just try to complete their low incomes) by being refunded for the containers they collect (included in the deposit-refund system) in the streets, by door-to-door, parcs, during events, or by donations. Most of them have low incomes. We could particularly meet old people with low pension. |

Le projet passe du temps avec : - Marica, co-fondatrice de la Coop les Valoristes, une femme qui m'a beaucoup impressionné par son courage et son dévouement. L'idée du projet lui ai venue des catadores de son pays d'origine, le Brésil, et depuis elle se dédie à 100% à la coopérative.
- Denis, un valoriste à la personnalité attachante, que j'ai suivi pour l'une de ses tournée de collecte.
- d'autres membres de la Coopérative, comme Louise, Mario et John, dans leur dépôt fixe, mobile et lors de la Fierté Montréal où j'ai été bénévole 3 jours.

The project spends time with : - Marica, co-founder of the Coop les Valoristes. A pretty impressive woman for her bravery and devotion. The idea of the cooperative comes from the catadores of her home country, Brasil, and since then, she dedicates all her time to the cooperative.
- Denis, a binner with a touching personality, who I followed for one or his collection tour.
- other members of the Cooperative, like Louise, Mario or John, at the permanent and mobile bottle-depot, and at the Festival des Fiertés (Gay Pride), where I helped for 3 days.
